Know more about the lenses of Your Eye Glasses

The lenses used in sunglasses are very important for providing proper protection for the eyes. With the advancements in the glass manufacturing technology, different types of lenses are used in glasses. Each and every type caters to different needs. You have to know about the lenses to choose the glass for your purpose.

Lenses are made of plastic or glass. Plastic lenses are light weight made of plastic material that can be tinted with different colors of your choice. They block 80% of UV rays thus providing good protection from the sun. Glass lenses are more prone to scratches but they have excellent inherent optical quality.

Polycarbonate lenses are widely used in sunglasses these days. They provide 100% sun blocking. They are very light and they don’t shatter very easily. Polycarbonate lenses are perfect for sporty glasses and children sunglasses as they are scratch resistant.

High index lenses are made of high index plastic material. They are widely used for cosmetic purposes as they are very thin. Like polycarbonate lenses, the high index lenses provide 100% protection from the harmful rays of the sun. High index lenses must have anti reflective coating because the surface reflections increase with the increase in the index of the lens.

Aspheric lenses are best suitable for people who need to wear high prescription glasses. In this type of lens the thickness of the lens is evenly distributed compared to the conventional lenses. Thus they provide very clear vision and also give you a stylish look. For light weight glasses, aspheric lenses are made with the high index material.

Photochromic lenses have the property to control the light entering the eye irrespective of the conditions prevailing outside. When you alternate between indoor and outdoor you have to choose these lenses to reduce the strain on the pupil of the eyes.

Polarized lenses are perfect for an outdoor aficionado. They greatly reduce the glare by canceling the rays due to reflection from the flat surface. These lenses can be used when you are engaged in driving, golfing, skiing, and so on.

Any glass must provide you protection from the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun. When you go out your eyes are exposed to the hard sun. So ensure that your lenses have proper UV coating. If your lens is made of polycarbonate or high index plastic, then you need not worry about UV protection as these materials inherently block the sun.

When you want your conventional prescription glasses to look thin and light weight you may consider the use of aspheric lenses or high index plastic lenses. Use of smaller frames may also add to the style.

Scratch resistant coating (SRC) is essential for all lenses to prevent the lenses from getting scratches very often. Polycarbonate and high index lenses come with this SRC coating by default.

Anti reflective coating (ARC) is essential for certain type of lenses like high index plastic to reduce the reflective rays. Glasses with this coating eliminated glare caused during driving in the night and staring at the computer. But glasses that have this ARC are prone to scratch and hence ARC and SRC are mutually exclusive. You cannot have both coatings on the same lens.

To improve the look and to see the world in your favorite color, you can add tints to your lenses. Many adults are now tinting their lenses with their favorite colors. Tints can be effectively applied to plastic lenses. The tints will be absorbed uniformly in plastic lenses. Glass lenses cannot be tinted uniformly and are more difficult to tint. High index plastic lenses are easier to tint than polycarbonate lenses. Lenses that have coatings such as ARC and SRC cannot be tinted as the color will not apply uniformly on the coating. If you want to tint, then you must remove the coatings, tint the lens and then reapply the coating. Tints may add style to your glass but you must ensure that your lenses are provided UV coating to protect your eyes. More than a fashion eyewear, the glass you wear must provide clear vision and proper protection for your eyes.

How to Clean your Glasses?

You must always keep your eyeglasses clean for a clear vision. As you wear it outside, it is very easy for the glass to catch dirt and oils from outside. Also as you use your eyeglasses casually, they pick up fingerprints which may distort the vision.

The sole purpose of cleaning your eyeglasses is to remove the residue or dirt without affecting the lenses. Different types of glasses require different handling. When you buy your eyeglasses you must ask about the ways to take care of them. If you don’t take proper care of your glasses then they will not provide you a clear vision thereby increasing the eyestrain.

Special lens wipes are available in big retails shops and malls for cleaning the glasses. You can use these wipes for any lenses like glass or plastic. They have specific usage instructions and you read them before cleaning your glass with lens wipes. The lens wipes clear the dirt from your glasses without damaging them.
You can clean your glass by washing it under warm water. First remove the dirt by rubbing with a fine silk cloth. Then rinse the glass with warm water. After that apply a mild detergent in your hands and make circular motion in the lenses to remove the oils and residue. Rinse again with warm water. When all the dust is cleared the water will be repelled by the lens and you can dry the glass with a soft cotton cloth. You must wipe the entire moisture in the lens and the frames to keep your glass clean and durable.

For cleaning the nose pads of your glass you can use baby tooth brushes or special brushes for cleaning nose pads. You must not let the brush rub the lens as its bristles may scratch your lens. If your glass has any special coating you have to check with the optometrist for the cleaning process. If you engage wrong cleaning process then it may spoil your glass.

While removing the glass, use both the hands so that frame does not bend. When you are not using the glass keep it in a hard case specially meant for keeping your glass. When you have designer glasses then you have to be more careful as they are expensive. Your glass will stay new and fresh as long you take proper care. Also you need to maintain the glasses clean for a clear distortion free vision.

What are Bifocals?

Myopia and hypermetropia are common well known eyesight problems. Generally, it is believed that people will have either of these problems. Prescription glasses were worn to correct these problems. Lenses will either be thick in the middle or at the edges to correct far or near sightedness. For those people who have both near and far sightedness, single vision lenses are not enough. They need lenses that provide correct vision of objects located both near and far. Bifocal eyeglasses are used in such cases.

Bifocal eyeglasses have two pairs of lenses one for correcting myopia and the other for correcting hypermetropia. Bifocal glasses have four lenses to provide correct vision for the wearer.

People will be wearing single vision glasses to correct either near or far sightedness. They will then switch over to bifocal glasses after some years when the necessity arises. People will wear bifocal lenses only when they suffer from the problem of both near and far sightedness. It is commonly believed that only after aging we should move to bifocal glasses. But this is not true. Even before realizing the problem, people will have combinational eyesight problem. If you wear bifocals at the initial stage, you can greatly reduce the strain on the eyes.

Different bifocal glasses are available and you should consult your optometrist to decide on what you want. In the previous decades, bifocal lenses led to lines in the viewing objects. This problem was eliminated with the new technology. Progressive lenses are now used by many people which gives corrected clear vision without any lines irrespective what and where the object is.

Until a few years bifocal lenses were designed such that the top portion of the lens aided in seeing distant objects and the lower portion of the lens aided in seeing closer objects. This was designed keeping in mind the fact that close objects are looked essentially for reading and writing purposes which need your heads put down. This design failed when more and more people started using computers for their work. The monitor of the computer is directly infront of the face and people wearing bifocal lenses started feeling uncomfortable. Then new bifocal lenses are designed such that they provide correct vision at different powers depending on where one looks through the lens.

People’s experience states that contact lenses are much better than bifocal glasses. These contact lenses gave very clear vision and were very comfortable when looking at the computer. People never needed to adjust the angle of their heads for a clear vision. Contact lenses provided better peripheral vision.

We cannot generalize that contact lenses clear all eyesight problems. You have to consult your optometrist whether you need bifocal glasses or contact lenses. The visual acuity of all persons will be changing with years. You have to check up your eyes atleast once in two years and wear the correct prescription glasses to maintain good eyes health.

High Index lenses

With the advancements in the lens making technology lenses that are lighter in weight are very common these days. The glass lenses were heavy and they have the problem of shattering. The plastic lenses were then introduced as they are shatter proof. The optical quality of plastic lenses was also good.

People who wear prescription glasses for vision correction used glass lenses. The vision correction is obtained by bending the light rays to the required extent. This bending depends on the index of refraction (IOR) of the lenses. To bend the rays, higher IOR is needed and the glass lenses were thick enough to bend the rays. But people wearing thick correction glasses started feeling being pushed out of the fashion world.

Then plastic lenses were used as corrective lenses but it was suitable for weak prescription. For a strong prescription thicker lenses were only used to reach a high index of refraction. Depending on the eyesight problem such as myopia or hypermetropia the lenses were thick either in the middle or at the edges. These people were waiting to wear the trendy flat thin glasses that can correct their vision too. The high index plastic material was used to make lenses keeping the thirst of these people in mind.

High index plastic lenses have a higher index of refraction and hence lesser material is sufficient to reach the required bending of light rays. The curves in the lenses were flat and they provide corrective vision.

The index refers to the amount of bending achieved. This can range anywhere from 1.50 to 1.74. The high index lenses with 1.74 IOR are very flat, very thin and very trendy. These lenses include the current anti reflective treatments to reflect off excess light.

These high index 1.74 lenses are perfect for fashion conscious people who want to be at the pinnacle of fashion. It is for people who want to get rid of their thick corrective glasses which hide the natural beauty of their eyes. These glasses can be used for even strong prescriptions.

The curves of high index 1.74 lenses are flat and due to the extremely flat curves off-axis vision may be blurred. To eliminate this problem aspheric lens technology is incorporated into these lenses. These extremely flat, thin light weight high index 1.74 lenses are sure to add a touch of style to your face but they cost more and they are worth it.

Is Anti Reflective Coating Necessary for your Eye glasses?

People wear glasses for various purposes. Some of you may wear spectacles while others may wear glasses for a stylish look. Everybody must wear sunglasses when you are coming out of your house. These glasses are worn to reduce the strain on the eyes. One major question arises with glasses. It is necessary to wear a glass with anti reflective coating? Well the answer depends on your own needs, but generally it is Yes.

The glasses without anti reflective coating allow the light incident on the glass into the eyes. This causes more light to enter the eye which may cause more problems when you are exposed to intense light. In such cases, the amount of light that is entering the eyes must be controlled to an optimum level to reduce the strain on the pupil.

When you travel in the night, you may certainly have the problem of halo effect around the headlights of the opposite vehicles. This will lead to unclear vision which may cause problems. You may even end up with accidents due to the distracted vision. To avoid this, anti reflective coating is essential for your glasses. This coating helps you get a clear vision of the lights ahead.

If you are a person who works for a long time staring at the computer, then you may very well know the problem of glare that affects you to view specific parts of the monitor. You have to strain your eyes for a clear vision. This excessive strain may cause irritation in the eyes or drying up of eye. To eliminate the problem of glare anti reflective coating is really necessary.

For those persons who have to work for a long time in dim light conditions, the use of glasses with anti reflective coating will greatly reduce the eye pressure.
Putting it simply, if you want to reduce the problem of eye strain then you have to wear glasses with anti reflective coating. These glasses will give you a stylish look when taking photographs. With ordinary glasses the images outside will hide your eyes. But with glasses with anti reflective coating, the reflection of images is completely blocked and you can see your eyes through the glasses in the photograph.

You have to take special care for protecting your glasses with anti reflective coating. These glasses get scratched very soon. They pick up fingerprints and they become dirty very soon, so you have to clean them with the special cloth. You have to carry the cleaning tools wherever you go because using ordinary cloth will cause scratches in the glass. If you can maintain properly, then you can very well choose the glass with anti reflective coating.

How to choose the best Eyeglass frame?

After a certain period of time you need to change your prescription eyeglasses. It is common to change the glass after two years. When you are out to buy a new glass for you, you can select the frame that looks trendy and that is hot at present. Based on your prescription lenses only you can choose your frames. You can seek the help of experts from your optometrist to choose the frame that best hold your lens as well as suits your face. If you have the ability to choose the frame you can choose the one that flatters your look. When shopping for glass frames you have to keep a few facts in mind.

Look for frames that fit best for your prescription lenses. The sole purpose of wearing prescription glasses is to correct your eyesight problem. Choose the frame that can hold your lens correctly in position. As you need to wear prescription lenses, you may need to choose a frame from a small list as certain trendy frames may not fit your lens.

You have to first concentrate on the shape of the frame. The frame shape must match the shape of your face. If you have an oval face, then you can choose any frame you want. If you have a round face, you have to choose oval frame. If you have a square face you have to choose a round frame. Choose the shape of the frame that is opposite to the shape of your face.

Frames are now available with different colors. You can choose one depending on your skin tone. You also have to choose the color based on when and where you will be wearing your glass. If you wear it regularly then you must choose colorless frames as they won’t be too flashy. If you are pale colored choose cool frame colors and if you are olive then choose bold colors that match your complexion.

There are other parts of the frame that you have to look into. They are the nose bridge and the arms of the frame. The frame must fit your skull. There are rimless frames that look very trendy or you can even select the wired frames. Spring hinged arms can be used if you will be alternately wearing and removing your glasses.

You must try out different frames before actually buying them. You must choose the one that fits your budget and gives you a trendy look. The secret behind choosing the right frame is the ability to match the frame to the shape of your frame and the color of your skin.
